30.11.2019: TEDx Conference Nicosia / Zypern
Many companies think that innovation and digitalization automatically have to be expensive. In his presentation at the TEDx conference in Nicosia, Dr. Jens-Uwe Meyer summed up this mistake in thinking by delivering a provocative keynote: “Why money kills creativity.
His thesis: Excessively large budgets can crush creativity. Instead of asking exciting new questions, budgets are managed. And instead of experimenting, the fear of failure of the project dominates. The art of innovation is to make a lot out of little: “One of the greatest entrepreneurial qualities is to turn scrap into sweets. Crap into candy. But how can you learn this if you have a big budget right at the beginning?”
In his inspiring speech, entrepreneurs and managers learn why innovation does not require large budgets. And why low-budget ideas often beat innovations that have been generated with high financial investment.
“Thanks so much for your outstanding talk at the TEDx Conference. It was thrilling and highly entertaining listening to the story of your life and to see how you connect it to the challenges organizations face today.”
Lydia Zannettou, TEDx Conference Manager

Innovation in the pharmaceutical industry is multifaceted: from better vaccinations, e.g. against hospital germs, therapies against previously untreatable tumours or new treatment options for genetic diseases with the prospect of cure. The latest developments were presented at the Innovation Day Pharma. Dr. Jens-Uwe Meyer opened the event with an exciting keynote speech in which he demonstrated that the concept of innovation encompasses much more than product development. In today’s fast-moving world, it is not enough to focus on customer wishes, because these are often a thing of the past as soon as they have been implemented. In many companies, a distinction can be made between those who want to preserve the system and feel bound by rules, and “pirates” who do not want to be restrained in their thinking and who like to think outside the box. While the pirates are bubbling over with ideas, they get to hear from those who preserve that these are not feasible. According to Meyer, both types are important in order to be able to implement innovations. The keepers must not stop the pirates too early with objections. Companies need a culture that does not condemn failure and tolerates intelligent mistakes.
„Your keynote was very well received. We asked the audience in a survey to evaluate the event. One question was: Which presentation did you like best? Here 2/3 of the respondents stated your performance, although you had fierce competition.“
